This is my cross-level gauge. It’s an important tool in checking that the track is the right distance apart and it hasn’t moved; and that it’s level – or at the right elevation for curves. Day and night (and you change shifts from one to the other regularly), we are checking the network – in my case Huddersfield and the surrounding area. Often it’s a case of some general maintenance; sometimes we do find and have to fix a defective rail or another fault. So far I’ve worked with a number of different teams, including ultrasonics – and I’ve set my sights on being a technical officer for one of the inspection teams. But, for now, it’s me, my team and my cross-level gauge. And I use it every day.
